Spanish football has produced some of the best midfielders in the world in the 21st century. The current LaLiga midfielders feature a number of very interesting young players, as well as several established veterans who are still showing their best performance.
We’ll take a look at the best midfielders in LaLiga. The ranking is based on their L15 (average of last 15 matches) score on the Sorare scoring matrix. This takes into account decisive actions such as goals and assists, but passes, interceptions and duels won also result in goals, meaning LaLiga’s defensive midfielders are often able to outperform their more attack-minded counterparts.
To enter our rankings, players must appear in at least eight of their last 15 qualifying matches. That includes LaLiga, some international matches and all European matches.

LaLiga central midfielders 2024/25 – Top 5 ranking based on their Sorare scores
5. Martin Zubimendi, Real Sociedad – 57.1
Rated very highly in Donostia for some time, it feels like the rest of Spain and the rest of Europe are starting to appreciate just how good Martin Zubimendi is. The 25-year-old is entering his prime and has been linked with several European football giants over the last few transfer windows, most notably turning down a move to Liverpool this summer.
Zubimendi is clearly very happy at his boyhood club, but that relationship will likely continue as long as he maintains his current level. So far this season, he has not only provided his usual stability in Real Sociedad’s midfield, but has also filled in for the injured Rodri for Spain.
Luis de la Fuente is clearly very happy with the player he recently described as “the second best defensive midfielder in the world” behind the current Ballon d’Or holder. Zubimendi completed 92.7% of his passes during the Nations League group stage and scored the game-winning goal against Denmark with a long-range shot.
4. Eduardo Camavinga, Real Madrid – 58.0
Perhaps due to his versatility, Eduardo Camavinga has been used at left-back and in various midfield capacities during his three years at Real Madrid so far, without ever earning a regular place in any one position.
The 2024/25 season looks to provide a better opportunity for Camavinga to do just that, but so far he has struggled with injuries, although his performance level is still quite high having played just 431 minutes for his club this season.
With Camavinga now fit and given the severity of Real Madrid’s injury problems which may force Aurelien Tchouameni into a long-term centre-back role, and potentially even see Fede Valverde drop to right-back, the 22-year-old’s moment looks as if it is right. perhaps the end has come.
He now has the opportunity to become a consistent starter in Los Blancos’ midfield. He certainly has the talent to make the most of those opportunities.
3. Marc Casado, Barcelona – 59.2
As recently as this summer, Marc Casado’s name was still unknown, and only more followers of Barca’s B team, who play in Spain’s third tier, were likely to tap into his potential.
Even when Casado was handed his full debut on the opening day of the season by Hansi Flick against Valencia, few expected his stint in the team to be anything more than a temporary solution until the likes of Frenkie de Jong and Gavi returned to fitness.
However, Casado surprised everyone with his composure and quality in midfield. These players are now fit again, but it is difficult to remove the 21 year old player from the team.
Operating as a defensive midfielder, Casado has developed a defence-splitting passing ability and recently recorded assists in three consecutive games, against Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Espanyol. He also made his debut for Spain during the recent international break.
2. Luka Modric, Real Madrid – 60.6
Even though he has just turned 39, Luka Modric is still going strong for Real Madrid and Croatia. Given Toni Kroos’ retirement, he will likely have greater responsibility for Los Blancos this season despite his advanced age, with few other players capable of providing as much control as the veteran midfielder in midfield.
Even though he has only started five times in the League and twice in the Champions League, Modric has still featured in every Real Madrid game this season and he often comes off the bench to help provide a bit of inspiration for a team that often comes up late. . reaches its peak at the end of the game.
Modric also remains a regular for his country and has a pass completion rate of over 90% in each of the four different competitions he has participated in so far.
1. Jude Bellingham, Real Madrid – 60.7
Despite his goal threat dropping significantly and the perception that he is not having a great season, Jude Bellingham still ranks high on the list of the best LaLiga midfielders and remains one of the best players in LaLiga.
Last season, he was used more as an attacking midfielder, often operating almost as a center forward between wingers Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior. Kylian Mbappe’s arrival at the Santiago Bernabeu has forced Bellingham to drop deeper and it feels like Carlo Ancelotti has yet to find the right solution for the Englishman, or indeed the rest of the squad who are struggling for form.
Except for his goal tally, Bellingham’s overall numbers are still quite impressive. The 21-year-old has recorded six assists for club and country so far in the 2024/25 season and has been a key figure for England during the Nations League.
The 10 best LaLiga central midfielders at the moment

2 | Luka Modric | Real Madrid | 60.6 |
3 | Marc Casado | Barcelona | 59.2 |
4 | Edward Camavinga | Real Madrid | 58.0 |
5 | Martin Zubimendi | Royal Society | 57.1 |
6 | Fede Valverde | Real Madrid | 55.6 |
7 | Yvan Neyou | Leganes | 55.6 |
8 | Pedri | Barcelona | 55.2 |
9 | Santi Comesaña | Villareal | 53.9 |
10 | Luis Milla | Getafe | 52.8 |
Again, only players who have appeared in at least 50% of the available matches over the last 15 matches are considered. Only players who mostly operate as central midfielders, not wide midfielders or wingers, appear.
Real Madrid players make up four of the six best LaLiga midfielders at the moment according to Sorare, with Fede Valverde ranking slightly behind his team-mate after a slight dip in form. Barcelona’s Pedri is also ranked in the top 10, with signs that the 21-year-old may be returning to his best after a frustrating few years.
Otherwise, LaLiga’s attacking midfielders will be outnumbered by their defensive counterparts here, with Leganes’ Yvan Neyou ranked 7th and looking like he could be a very important player in the newly promoted side’s midfield. Villarreal’s Santi Comesaña and Getafe’s Luis Milla complete the top 10.
